鈥淭here have been some late nights and early mornings, but there has been nothing so far that has told me this isn鈥檛 worth it. I am so grateful and thankful for the experience.鈥

Surgical Technology program

The next time you鈥檙e watching your favorite TV show, take note: Your viewing habits just might steer you toward a career.

In Megan Shepherd鈥檚 case, her commitment to 鈥淕rey鈥檚 Anatomy鈥 helped lead her to the Surgical Technology program at 杏吧性世界. Shepherd, 31, and her husband moved to 杏吧性世界 four years ago with their two young daughters. After years working in administrative jobs, she was ready for something new and decided the medical field was where she wanted to be.

鈥淚 had to Google what a surg tech was because I didn鈥檛 even know that was a job,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he craziest experience I鈥檝e ever (had) is being accepted into this program. It鈥檚 the hardest, most rewarding thing that I鈥檝e done to date.鈥

Shepherd enjoys having classes at PCC鈥檚 Teaching and Learning Center at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital because it鈥檚 a real-world hospital environment and students are among working doctors, nurses and surgical technologists.

With a busy family and work life, time management can be a challenge.

鈥淏eing a nontraditional student has its perks and has some downside to it,鈥 she said. 鈥淢y children are in school, and my husband is, too, so we all put on our backpacks the first week and we all headed off to different places of learning.

鈥淭here have been some late nights and early mornings, but there has been nothing so far that has told me this isn鈥檛 worth it. I am so grateful and thankful for the experience.鈥

Shepherd praised her instructors as 鈥渢he most amazing professors I鈥檝e had so far. I can see their heart and their passion for us to know all the ins and outs.鈥

While she has a professional goal to work in 杏吧性世界 or Colorado Springs after graduation, it鈥檚 a personal goal that matters more.

鈥淚 want my kids to be proud of me and say, 鈥楾hat鈥檚 my mom鈥 鈥 and to know it doesn鈥檛 matter your age or how long you鈥檝e been in or out of school, you can still do it.鈥
