Jeanelle Soto-Quintana鈥檚 path as a first-generation student wasn鈥檛 a smooth one at first 鈥 and that鈥檚 just one of the reasons she鈥檚 become such a valuable resource for the students she works with at PCC as the director of pre-college programs.
鈥淢y first year at college, I was placed on academic probation because I had no idea what I was doing and didn鈥檛 have anyone at home to ask for help,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was overwhelmed with the campus, somewhat intimidated by the professors and staff and I felt like everyone else knew something that I didn鈥檛 鈥 so I continued to pretend and my attendance was poor until I began to meet students like me.鈥
A combination of things helped her find her way 鈥 a Chicano Studies class with an engaged professor and classmates, a connection with the 杏吧性世界 Hispanic Education Foundation and its resources, and a willingness to become more involved on campus.
鈥淚 began to learn the importance of networking (and) began participating with campus events and attended leadership conferences,鈥 she said. 鈥淒uring my junior year, I attended a national MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztl谩n) conference with about 30 of my peers.鈥
Jeanelle earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in sociology and a master鈥檚 in business administration from the University of Southern Colorado (now Colorado State University 杏吧性世界).
She advises all new students 鈥 especially those who are the first in their family to attend college 鈥 to seek campus resources before they need help.
鈥淒on鈥檛 be afraid to meet new people. Get involved 鈥 attend campus events; join an affinity group or club; create a study group to improve your school habits,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ring your family to campus and show them the places that are important to you.鈥
PCC鈥檚 culture can ease the transition, she said.
鈥淧CC is big enough to provide the college experience and small enough so you don鈥檛 get lost or ignored. Staff and faculty truly care about their students,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t is the perfect place to learn how to be a college student and learn how to be whatever it is that you want to be 鈥 for much less money. I sent my own children here first!鈥
